The debut studio album from Benjamin Gordon Cooper is a heart-warmingly dynamic statement from a musician who has shed all inhibitions in order to assimilate, reconfigure and lovingly delve into the soundtracks of his life.

A few years of sobriety, a retreat to rural Suffolk and increased isolation have finally given BGC the space to explore his past - the ‘thunder in his soul’ - with greater clarity. Entirely self-performed and produced, this stridently unquantised collection is as Cooper puts it, a method of “finding peace in amongst the rage within and without, and a sort of discovery of who I am and have been - hence the sizeable tonal shifts and leaps between light and shade”.

Influenced by everything from bucolic piano-led ambience to experimental lo-fi post-punk, murky industrialised grime to the hopefulness of gospel choirs, ‘30s Greek clarinetists to stately ‘70s pop troubadours, the record rubs moments of beautifully innocent melodicism against passages of tether-end exasperation, using a thrillingly DiY, wonderfully moving approach to “embrace the everyday, as opposed to constantly fighting it”.
